Message from the Director of the Laboratory
Dear visitors,
Welcome to the official website of the Laboratory of Optics and Vision of the University of Crete (LVO) (formerly the Vardinoyannis Laboratory of Eye Transplantation and Microsurgery – VEIC). VEIC was founded in the late 1980s by Professor Ioannis Pallikaris, with initial support from Theodoros Vardinoyannis. It was one of the first research and clinical centers dedicated to vision and optics in Greece and Europe, gaining worldwide recognition for its pioneering contribution to refractive surgery, as it was here that the world’s first LASIK surgery was performed, opening up new horizons in the surgical correction of refractive errors. This intellectual and technological pioneering spirit continues to this day, with the LVO remaining at the forefront of innovation in ophthalmology.
Through this revamped website, we invite you to discover our scientific, educational, and clinical work, our international collaborations, and the opportunities we offer to students, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
Goals and Perspectives
The main purpose of the LVO is to develop basic, technological and applied research and to promote sciences related to the field of Vision and Optics. The Laboratory aspires to become a core for the production and dissemination of new knowledge with the aim of advancing the Sciences of Optics and Vision. Translational research aimed at knowledge concerning humans and their problems is the first priority of the Laboratory.
To achieve its mission, the Laboratory sets individual goals related to Research, Education and the provision of specialized and pioneering health services at a global level.
Research
The LVO conducts laboratory and clinical research covering all scientific fields of ophthalmology and vision sciences.
Education
The training offered by the LVO includes the organization of specialization and lifelong learning seminars, the organization of clinical tutorials within the program of national and international conferences, and the organization of clinical seminars in collaboration with the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI).
